I’m taking my electric vehicle onto the ferry - what information do I need to be aware of?

When we refer to electric vehicles, the term includes, but is not limited to all road going vehicles powered by batteries, including hybrid electric vehicles, e-bikes, e-scooters, electric go karts, balance (hover) boards or similar.  

Electric vehicles 

When you travel with an electric vehicle on our ferries, we need you to ensure that the electric vehicle has no damage to the battery compartment. If it is thought to have this kind of damage, we won’t be able to ship the vehicle unless its battery is removed, or it’s ‘certified as safe’ for transport at sea by the manufacturer, or their authorised representative.  

‘Certified safe’ means a signed declaration from a competent person recognised by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) ‘TechSafe’ accreditation, or similar (e.g. the manufacturer or their representative).  

e-bike or e-scooter 

If you’re travelling with an e-bike or e-scooter, they can only be shipped on the vehicle decks.  

Electric go-karts, balance boards or similar 

Electric go-karts, balance boards or similar can only be shipped when secured in another vehicle. They cannot be taken into any of our passenger areas.

Charging 

Passengers cannot charge any type of electric vehicle on our ferries. Electric vehicle charging points are available at some of our ports. Find out more on our port pages.
