Travelling with bikes and equipment

If you’re planning to explore the islands with the help of a bike, canoe, paddleboard – or similar, here’s all you need to know about travelling with equipment. If you’re travelling as a foot passenger or with a vehicle, we’ll need you to tell us about the equipment you’re travelling with.

Travelling in a vehicle

You can travel with your equipment on a rack or trailer. The charge per vehicle depends on the type of vehicle and its length – which will include racks, towbars, trailers and/or any overhanging roof rack items. Be sure to specify your details accurately so we can allocate space.

If you're travelling in a vehicle with a bike rack, add a bike rack to your booking. Your reservation will be for passenger(s), vehicle(s) and bike racks - but you don't need to add the number of bikes separately.

Foot passengers

Your equipment travels for free. However, we need you to book in advance by adding your equipment to your reservation – it will give you more certainty about space. Without this, we can’t always guarantee shipment during busy periods. If you don’t get on a particular sailing, we’ll do everything we can to get you and your equipment on the next available sailing.

If you're a foot passenger travelling with a bike, add a bicycle to your booking. Your reservation will be for a passenger(s) and bicycle(s).

FAQs

Yes, bicycles, kayaks, paddleboards or equivalent are carried free of charge on all our ferries.

If you're a foot passenger travelling with a bike, kayak, paddleboard or equivalent, or if you're a vehicle passenger with a bike or roof rack you need to let us know you're bringing one with you when you make your booking. When you book online, you'll be prompted to provide this information.

This information helps us manage capacity, and lets you know if we have space on that particular sailing.

Yes. In some cases, we may ask you to remove the roof rack or bicycles / equipment from the roof. 

If you’re travelling with your bike / equipment on your vehicle roof (i.e. not a trailer that’s included in your reservation), please speak to a member of staff when you arrive at the port.

No, bikes and equipment are carried free of charge on all our ferries. Bike carriers on trailers are calculated separately at the time of your booking – please ensure to provide all information required.

When travelling on foot, we need you to specify that you are taking your bike or equipment with you – whether you’re travelling in a vehicle or on foot. This detail is essential. You can add this during our online booking process. Doing this means you have more certainty on space.

We will do everything we can to accommodate all cyclists and bicycles / equipment, or those travelling on foot while carrying bikes and equipment - however, we cannot guarantee shipment on busy sailings, especially when this hasn’t been added to your booking in advance. If you do not get a particular sailing, we will do everything we can to get you the next available sailing.
